Mountain & Meadow Garden Design
Mountain & Meadow Garden Design is a woman-owned fine gardening and design studio based in New York's Hudson Valley. The studio uses an ecologically-focused approach, balancing aesthetics, artistry and the natural environment. We design, install, and maintain organic flower and vegetable gardens, meadows, and woodlands, and specialize in native plants. We also offer garden consultations and one-on-one garden coaching.
Our Garden Ethos
Native Plants
Weaving native plants into our garden designs is central to our ethos. Native plants are species indigenous to a particular region, occurring there naturally for hundreds or thousands of years. Because these plants are specifically adapted to the environmental conditions of their region, they often require less water, fertilizers, and pesticides. That means less work for you - and fewer harmful impacts on the environment. Native plants provide crucial food sources and habitats for native animals, birds and insects. They also help foster a strong sense of place, as their scents, forms, and colors comprise the landscape around us, while their sustaining relationships with local fauna draw life to our region. And of course, natives are uniquely beautiful.
Organic Practices
At Mountain & Meadow, we are committed to organic gardening. We avoid synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, focusing instead on enriching soil with compost, selecting plants that are naturally hardy and pest-resistant, and using organic products to fight pests and disease when necessary. This approach not only supports healthier plants and soil, but also reduces any impacts to wildlife, pollinators, and people.
Hand Tools
Mountain & Meadow sets itself apart by using hand tools instead of power tools to get the job done. We believe that hand tools add value to any garden project by minimizing noise pollution, reducing our carbon footprint, and allowing us to work with a finer attention to detail.
